How I Got Here
By Ellie Silcott
I went horse back riding in Tennessee. when I got back, I asked some people if they knew of anywhere that I could go horse back riding and my friend Haleigh recommended GGHF. One day I went to visit the farm and I knew I was going to love it when I saw it. I started lessons with Mrs. Julie for one seven week session and then I rode with Mrs. Jacquie, I’m still riding with her now.
I love Grubb Grove Horse Farm and all the horses, Mrs. Jacquie, and my two favorite horses Lucy and Fancy.

As a little girl I always loved horses. While growing up I’ve always dreamt of riding, owning and bonding with these marvelous animals. I’ve lived on Shell Road for about thirteen years. Going through these years I stopped emphasizing the joy I got from horses, because it seemed as if there was no way to have them in my life. Well in the summer of 2011 that all changed.
A good friend of mines, Terryn Gordon, told me about this horse farm he volunteers for during the summer. On the way to the farm I was so ecstatic; come to find out this farm has been down the street and around the corner. Meeting the horses an the owner, Mrs. Jacquie, an awesome woman, was a great experience. What she does everyday for people has inspired me to do the same, to own my own horse farm one day. I feel completely in love! Now I’m currently taking riding lessons there, and will continue to as long as possible, because when I’m here around the horses, nothing else in my life matters. I can honestly say this is the place to be for me!

I was never one of those little girls who played with dolls or Barbies I was always an animal lover. A tomboy at heart, I was always outside, even when it was raining. I never really had the opportunity to be involved with horses because we moved around so much. I was 10 when I had my first riding experience while visiting family in Tennessee. Since then, horses are all I think about!
When we moved to Virginia my dad and I were looking for something to be involved in like an animal shelter. My mom had an amazing idea to volunteer at a horse farm. She started looking into it and found out that Grub Grove Horse Farm had a work in exchange for lessons program for teens.
As soon as we got there I fell in love with the place. There were dogs, rabbits, and plenty of horses. It was clean, comfortable and Miss Jacquie was really nice. Even though there wasn’t an opening for helpers right away, I didn’t give up. Now, my dad and I are at GGHF every week. I take riding lessons and we clean stalls. GGHF is my favorite place to be and I hope that I can be a part of it for a long time.
